    Rediscovering Mallorca

Mallorca was an early starter in beach tourism. It was the pioneer island of charter flights and developed like no other an industry that has spawned large hotel consortiums, today present all over the world.

But tourism trends have changed over the last decades. Although sun and beach tourism is still important, new visitors are demanding all kinds of experiences. And perhaps the most natural of all is walking.

Hiking in Mallorca has experienced a real boom in recent decades. The island’s best kept natural secrets were waiting to be rediscovered in the phenomenal Serra de Tramuntana.

The Serra de Tramuntana mountain range

The winding roads leading to small villages in the west, sheltered by a majestic mountain range, kept the tourist masses away for years. But the growing interest in nature and the awakening of hiking as a new tourist activity opened up this hidden side of Mallorca to the new tourist minorities.

Villages such as Sóller, Deià or Valldemosa have managed to maintain all their original charm and today you can stay in small charming hotels. And from there, you can embark on the most iconic hiking routes in Mallorca, through the Serra de Tramuntana.

    Best hikes in Mallorca

Our programme of 5 best hikes in Mallorca concentrates on the Serra de Tramuntana, starting or finishing in Puerto de Sóller. Except for the last walk, which is a circular tour around Valldemosa.

These are routes with a medium/high level of difficulty, suitable for people who hike regularly.

    Island nature

February and March are the months of almond and orange blossom. The fields are full of exquisite colours and fragrances. The weather is mild and suitable for walking without the excessive heat of summer. And the sea, although cold, is suitable for swimming.

Sóller, the little train and the port. A bit of history

It was not until the beginning of the 20th century that Sóller began to shake off the traditional isolation that the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range had imposed on it.

With great effort, a tunnel was built under the mountain range through which the island’s first railway connected Sóller with the world. And it was the “Sóller Oranges” that brought about this infrastructure. The curative powers of vitamin C had just been discovered and the city was ready to pay for this oranges, wherever they were produced. The work began in 1905 and was completed in 1912. And so it was that Sóller entered the world, hand in hand with the “Orange Express “.

Some time later, a tram line was inaugurated between Sóller and its port for the transport of fruit and vegetables and shipment to other destinations.

But it was not until the end of the 1990s that road traffic connected Sóller with the road network of Mallorca via the new 3.14 km long “Túnel de Sóller”. This engineering work crosses under the Sierra de Alfábia mountain range and makes it possible to bypass the “Coll de Sóller”, a high mountain pass along a winding road full of curves.

Mallorca - DeiaDeià, heading Port de Sóller

After half an hour's drive we reach the picturesque village of Deià, a refuge for famous painters and musicians, nestled in the heart of the Serra de Tramuntana. Situated 300 metres above the sea, Deià enjoys a splendid view over the Mediterranean. The beautiful cobbled houses mark the beginning of the path along the west coast. The walk follows the route of the GR221 right up to the door of our hotel.
But before starting our walk, it is worth visiting the 18th century church, with exceptional views over Deià and its mountainous surroundings. And so we begin our descent through olive groves towards the quiet Cala de Deià. Before heading north, we can still enjoy a morning coffee in one of its bars or even a refreshing dip in its clean waters.
The GR221 now winds its way through holm oak forests and olive groves, permanently accompanied by a breathtaking view of the sea. And shortly before starting the descent towards Port de Sóller, we will visit the Finca Son Mico where we will be able to taste some of the best homemade cakes in Mallorca.

Rutas senderismo en MallorcaFrom Cúber to Port de Sóller

Today we travel to the Cúber reservoir, 45 minutes from Sóller. Situated at an altitude of 800 metres, this reservoir is located in the very heart of the Serra de Tramuntana, in the heart of the Natural Area. It is a protected environment where the black vulture lives in complete freedom.
The path takes us through high pastures in a limestone rocky environment shaped by the passage of time and erosion.  After reaching the Coll d'es Coloms we ascend to the summit of Puig de L'Ofre.  From an altitude of 1093 metres you will enjoy a magnificent view in any direction.
From now on, the entire path descends towards the pass where the Barranc de Biniaraix ravine is located. Here you will find one of the most impressive landscapes in the Serra de Tramuntana. The Barranc de Biniaraix has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest for its natural, historical and ethnographic value. A stepped stone path, made up of almost 2,000 steps, awaits us. The Pilgrims' Staircase is one of the most striking works of popular engineering in Mallorca, as it descends through the karstic canyon to Biniaraix.

Mallorca - Cala TuentFrom Port de Sóller to Cala Tuent, and back by boat

Cala Tuent is a small, unspoilt beach that we are heading for today on foot. Directly from our hotel, the walk takes us northwards, leaving behind the last urbanisations of Port de Sóller. The path gradually ascends through pastures and olive groves, running along the edge of the cliffs.
When we reach the secluded beach of Cala Tuent, the path starts to descend until it reaches the sea. But we will still have enough time to enjoy a good swim before returning by boat. A pleasant 50-minute boat trip along the fascinating coastline of the cliffs of Sóller.
